Surely you've heard by now that the internet is the way of the future. If you have not, poor thing, you're probably living under some moss-covered rock. But, seriously speaking, there are still vast ribbons of rural America that are simply not wired. It's not profitable for internet providers to go out there and lay down the requisite wires and cables. Therefore, these people are stuck with either nothing or incredibly slow and painful dial-up connections, which really don't allow one to take advantage of what the internet has to offer.
