Cheapest Calling Cards For Long Distance Phone Calls

There are lots of cheap calling cards available to consumers nowadays. Whether you are going on a vacation or on a business trip, making long distance calls is no longer an issue for the budgeted buyer. But in order to get the best prepaid calling card for yourself, you need to know a little bit about how to choose the best calling card.

The Three Big Companies in the USA

In the USA, there are three large companies which sell calling cards. These are AT&T, MCI WorldCom and Sprint. These companies are quite expensive and their call charges range from 69 cents to 89 cents per minute plus a surcharge. The surcharge can go upto $1.25 for every call that you make. However, these companies provide monthly plans for which you can sign up and thus reduce the surcharge which will be charged to your account. For example, if you pay $1 every month, then the calling charge rate on AT&T cards will drop to 25 cents per minute. Other companies also have similar plans.

Call Home

Use the ‘Call Home’ Feature to Save Money from your Prepaid Calling Card

One of the lesser-known features of a prepaid calling card is the ‘call home’ feature. Even though most of the cards today have this feature in them, few people know about it. In this article we will view this feature and see how it can be beneficial to us.

What is the Call Home Feature ?

A call home feature is like the speed dialing facility, but the difference lies in the fact that it can be used only for one number. This feature can be configured from any touch-tone phone and is very easy to use. Basically, you should choose a number for this facility that is the most frequently dialed number by you. It does not necessarily have to be your home number.

How To Use A Prepaid Calling Card

Using a prepaid calling card is very simple. If you have never used a calling card, then read on… In this article, you will learn how to make a call from a prepaid phone card that has been purchased from a shop.

Step 1 : Buy a Prepaid Card

The first step is to go to a shop and purchase any phone card. They come in different value ranges from $10 to $100 and more. For the sake of discussion, let us assume that you have bought a $9.99 + tax card which gives you a 100 minute talk-time card.

Step 2 : Get the Card Activated

Now, please remember this – the card does not have any value till it is activated. This means that you will not be able to make any calls till you get the card activated. To do this, simply ask the cashier in the shop to activate the card. He/she will swipe the card through the same machine that is used for a credit or debit card.

Step 3 : Dial the Toll free number and enter the PIN Number

After your card has been activated, you have to dial the toll-free 1-800 number mentioned on the card from a phone. Then, choose your preferred language as English in order to continue with the call. Next, enter the pin number that is present on the backside of your calling card.

Step 4 : Dial your Destination Number

After this, simply dial the destination phone number. You will be informed of the balance amount remaining in your card and how much talk-time you have for the particular call that you have made.

Problems which you might face while calling from a Payphone

Prepaid calls can be made from any kind of telephone instrument – be it a landline, a mobile phone or a payphone. However, making calls from a payphone might not be so easy as all calling cards are not compatible with all payphone companies. For example, calling from a Global Network Communications payphone with an AT&T prepaid calling card might not work but if you call from a Verizone payphone, then it might work.

Be aware of the Hidden Costs

Also, please beware of the additional costs of calling from a payphone. Most calling card companies deduct some money from your account if you call from a payphone. AT&T cuts an extra 6 minutes of talk time from your calling card if you make calls from a payphone. So this can prove to be very expensive if you make short calls.
